What Ordinary Curtain Fabric Does in Ten Seconds

Most curtains hanging in homes right now are ordinary polyester or a synthetic blend. This is one of them, hung on a rod, with a lighter held to the bottom edge for a few seconds and then taken away.

It doesn't go out. The fabric keeps burning on its own, curling upward as it is consumed, and dripping molten material onto the floor below. That is the "flaming rain" that turns one burning curtain into a burning room, and nobody had to keep the flame on it.

Frisian Flame Retardant Curtains: Same Flame, 30 Seconds

Now both fabrics at once: ordinary fabric on the left, Frisian flame-retardant fabric on the right, each with a lighter held to the hem.

At ten, twenty and thirty seconds, everything is happening on the left. The ordinary panel chars through, shrinks and drips. Frisian scorches only where the flame touches it: the burn stays at the hem, nothing melts or falls, and it stops on its own once the lighter comes away.

That is what NFPA 701 describes, and it is why flame retardant curtains are specified for hotels, schools and public buildings. Frisian is the same fabric, made to measure for your windows.
