What Is A Finial
So, what are finials? Finials may seem to go a bit unnoticed for the untrained eye, but it’s understood to ask “what is a finial and what is their purpose?” Well, the curtain rod finial is that decorative ornament or knob that sticks out from the curtain rod. These are fairly common for most curtain rods and have been increasingly growing in popularity.
Finials for curtains are more than just a lovely decoration for the curtain rod. These also just happen to serve a functional purpose too. They help prevent curtains from slipping off at the ends of the rods. Finials come in a variety of finishes, colors, designs, so you’re bound to have a large selection that you can choose from.
Common Types Of Curtain Rod Finials: How To Choose Them?
There’s a wide variety of different types of curtain rod finials. You’re mostly going to find that the finials will automatically be on the curtain rod itself, but, from time to time, you can find finials separate from the curtain rod but installation could potentially be more difficult. So, depending on what type of style that you want to go for, you may be better off purchasing a finial that is already attached to a curtain rod.
Select A Material
When it comes to choosing the right finial, you’re first going to want to consider the material of the rod itself. Since not all finials are attached to the rod, you’re going to want to make sure your selection complements each other. Some of the most common materials would include brass, nickel, metal, plastic, and wood. But you shouldn’t skip out on what’s going to look best together, especially with the finial doesn’t come with the rod. So, here are some suggestions:
- Steel rods look best with bronze finials
- Wooden rods will look best with both bronze and wooden finials
- Nickel rods with look perfect with glass or nickel finials
- Brass tends to look best with brass, but sometimes glass finials can work too
Even though the material itself does mater a lot, you’re also need to keep in mind what the color and the finish is. Not just for the finial itself, but also, you’ll also might need to think about the color and finish for the curtain rod too.
Select A Color And Finish
Ideally, you’ll need to go after some color coordination. Just as the color of the curtain rod needs to be taken into account when pairing it up with curtains, the same can also be said for the finials within the curtain rod itself. So, you’ll need to think hard and be very selective in this process. A great example would be acrylic or glass finials. These are usually white or even some clear color. White or clear designs usually match up nicely with the color grey.
Black perfectly goes with black, and bronze finials and look pretty nice with brass rods. In general, your goal is to make sure that the finial complements the curtain rod. You’re also going to need to make sure that the finial and curtain rod nicely pairs up with the curtains. This little detail can make a fairly large difference when it comes to your window treatments, don’t forget that.
Make Sure The Style Matches The Room Decor Style
You also can’t forget the fact that the finial should also nicely pair up with the décor that’s in your space. If you’re going for a more Scandinavian-minimalistic approach, then having some brassy finial is just going to stand out and completely ruin the intended appearance for the space, right? Just like with all the other accessories that are within your space, you’ll need to choose wisely on this. So, what type of style do you have in your space?
Do you have a more modern style or do you sway towards more traditional interior designs? Ball finials and open finials (similar to ball finials) tend to be the more common type of finial that’s available. They can suit both traditional and modern styles. Ornate finishes and glass finials often tend to swing more towards traditional home décor. But it never hurts to judge yourself to see what suits your rod, suits your space, but also what best suits your personal taste.
